Panel 8 Prevention of occupational diseases and accidents: too costly in an era of austerity

Every year more than 4000 workers die due to accidents at work and more than 3 million are victims of a serious accident or occupational health problems, and yet prevention of occupational diseases and accidents show clear differences in EU countries. The compensation of the personal damage costs hundreds of millions each year. Sometimes, the compensation systems in the different countries contribute to prevention of diseases and accidents. The objective of this panel is to provide insight into the ways in which in several countries that preventive function of workers compensation is designed. Recommendations will be put forward to improve the preventive function of workers' compensation.
