Foresight debate: Sustainability – A European Brand

The ETUI is starting a new series of events – the Foresight debates. The new cycle of lunchtime seminars should focus on global trends posing future challenges to our societies and economies. Karl Falkenberg, Senior Adviser for Sustainable Development to the President of the European Commission, will speak at the inaugural edition of the Foresight debates. He will present his recent paper Sustainability Now! A European Vision for Sustainability according to the four points below:

1. A European Brand: A sustainable society is one where economic growth is compatible with planetary boundaries and fairly distributed among its citizens. Europe has a track record for inclusive growth, somehow lost in the last decades. It needs to strive for a new vision: living well and sharing fairly within the limits of the planet.

2. Which Requires Governance: Sustainability is here to stay. It requires policy designs to shape the future, political awareness and new forms of governance based on participation, transparency and leadership.

3. Focus on Hotspots: Sustainability covers all aspects of living together. This report focusses on a limited number of hotspots, recognising the need for sustainability concepts to be applied throughout all policy-making.

4. Sustainability Now: The European model is being challenged from within, while still looking attractive for many people living in less favourable conditions. Europe therefore urgently needs to introduce sustainability concepts into its domestic and foreign policies.

Speaker: Karl Falkenberg, Hors Class Senior Adviser to the European Commission, European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC)

Discussant: Luca Visentini, General Secretary ETUC

Moderator: Philippe Pochet, General Director ETUI
