Restructuring and relocation

Restructuring (both on macroeconomic and enterprise level) is a key interest for trade unions and works councils: it is the process where the future of workplaces is decided.

In order to shape restructuring and to influence on its effects on employees we need to gain an understanding of its drivers and mechanisms. In this regard the ETUI has conducted several research projects on the impacts of globalisation, EU enlargement and on the strategies of multinational companies in the changing environment (like outsourcing, off-shoring and relocation). The institute now turns its attention to the great restructuring challenge posed by climate change and is conducting research on the possible effects of the transformation to a low carbon economy on industrial workplaces in Europe. It is also a strategic aim of the ETUI to support workers representatives in anticipating and managing change in order to prevent `fait accompli` decisions by employers on restructuring.
