European works councils and SE representative bodies

Description

Several EWCs are faced with a strong trade union presence in a number of countries (mainly Western European), but with little or no trade union presence in other countries (mainly Eastern European countries). The workshop/seminar addresses this issue, looking at how EWCs can be used as an instrument for organising and for building trade union power.

Objectives

At its last congress, industriAll Europe defined a fourth priority: ‘building trade union power and European identity’. EWCs can contribute to this, as they are powerful instruments for identifying weak trade union presence in – sometimes – major company subsidiaries in (Eastern) Europe. We believe that if we combine the strong trade union presence in certain companies in certain countries (representation in company boards, easy access to company management, strong TU presence in national/local works councils) with a well-defined vision and strategy, we can define a strategy/action plan for organising ‘unorganised’ TNC plants in Eastern Europe.
