December 10, Brussels - Seminar Capital Matters in Europe 2009

Organised by: ETUI in cooperation with the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD (TUAC) and the Pensions and Capital Stewardship Project of the Labor and Worklife Program, Harvard Law School. Knowledge partner: Global Unions Committee on Workers Capital

Capital matters. Capital invested by workers and their families for their retirement and long term savings matters for the economy. While pension retirement systems differ across Europe, workers’ pension capital is channelled within the same globalised financial system lack of regulation of which is one of the main causes of the global crisis that we face today. Addressing the way that capital is invested, governed and regulated does matter for us all. It matters for the labour movement, for progressive forces within the academic world and civil society in Europe. Workers’ capital should drive investment in productive assets in the real economy in a fair, sustainable and responsible way and not divert it into unproductive financial transactions and speculation.

This one-day ETUI event draws on the experience of the authoritative annual “Capital Matters: Managing Labor’s Capital” conference organized by the Pensions and Capital Stewardship Project at Harvard Law School’s Labor and Worklife Program in the US. It will bring together member-nominated pension fund trustees, trade union officers, pension and other experts and policy makers who will confront views and experiences from across Europe and in a transatlantic perspective.
