Collective Bargaining developments July/August 2016

The summer edition of the collective bargaining newsletter is out. Here are the most important developments at European and member state level:

1. Denmark – Six Uber drivers were prosecuted and fined in Copenhagen ruling on 8 July for illegally offering a taxi service without a licence.


2. Finland – Business and industry organisations began a campaign against the binding extension of collective agreements. The extension safeguards the minimum working conditions of employees, prevents unfair competition between companies and guarantees equal pay.


3. Greece – In a report of the Independent Evaluation Office the IMF’s handling of the euro area crisis is criticized in three broad strands: first, the programs ‘only served to raise debt and demanded excessive fiscal adjustment’, second, the financing was ‘used to repay foreign banks’ and third, ‘growth-killing structural reforms, together with fiscal austerity, have led to an economic depression.’


4. Ireland – A draft of the Competition (Amendment) Bill 2016, which seeks to return collective bargaining rights to freelance workers, will be scheduled in the senate after the summer recess.


5. Norway – A District Court has given pilots and cabin crew a legal victory by upholding their claim that Norwegian Air Shuttle is their true employer. The court verdict sided with the workers’ claim and ruled that Norwegian Air Shuttle has engaged in illegal hiring practises.
