Monthly Forum: Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP): impacts on labour and working environment

The aim of this Monthly Forum was to give the overview of the negotiations between the US and the EU and to present the potential gains and sacrifices that it entails for both economies on employment, workers’ protection and labour standards. It also explored the divergences of the regulatory activity on both sides of the Atlantic and the tendency to avoid new regulation on both systems.

Invited academics and representatives from the ETUC and the ETUI presented a snapshot of the opportunities for employment and working conditions, and discussed difficult issues such as the open market in the transport sector, public services, harmonization of standards to the ‘lowest common denominator’, the divergence of approaches to health, safety and environment, the reduction of barriers for chemical management including emerging issues like nanotechnologies, endocrine disrupters and hydraulic fracturing.
