Sustainability in the Steel Industry

On 15-16 January 2015 the ETUI held a seminar in Brussels on worker participation and sustainability in the European steel industry. More than 40 worker representatives from the steel sector, including European Works Council members and board members from steel companies attended the meeting.

Key sustainability topics, including reducing the environmental impact of steel production, life cycle management, safer production processes, investment for innovation and environmental protection and sustainable workforce policies were discussed. The seminar included a discussion by different ETUI researchers of their approach to sustainability, presentations by experts on the steel industry, a presentation by a representative of the sustainability ratings agency VIGEO and a roundtable discussion with worker representatives, experts and an industry representative (Eurofer). This event was funded by the European Worker Participation Competence Centre (EWPCC), which is located within the ETUI and financed by contributions by worker representatives in the boards of European Companies (SEs).
