Briefing:

The European Commission published its proposal for the 2021-2027 multiannual financial framework (MFF) on 2 May this year. The proposed budget aims to help in responding to a number of current challenges facing Europe, such as the technological and demographic transition, climate change and scarce resources, unemployment, and new security threats from migratory pressures and geopolitical instability. At this Monthly forum the speakers and discussant will analyse and comment on the potential of this budget to deal with these issues, focusing on several key questions.

Can the new budget help in countering the trends of economic, social and political disintegration which have put increasing pressure on the structure of the EU?

Does this MFF proposal enhance or undermine the capacity of the EU to finance « new priorities » such the digital economy, sustainability, security, migration, human capital and skills, as well as support for small businesses and innovation?

Will the renewed European Social Fund (ESF), the so-called European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), with a clear reference to the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR), contribute to strengthening the EU’s social dimension?
