Countdown to the EU Social Summit – 10 days on the road to Gothenburg

The European Pillar of Social Rights (ESPR) is expected to be proclaimed at the EU Social Summit taking place in Gothenburg on the 17th of November.

In the 10 days leading up to the summit, the ETUC is pushing for a stronger EPSR, to be adopted and fully implemented.  The European Trade Union movement is recommending 10 steps on the road to Gothenburg, each providing practical support to ensure that the social rights embedded in the EPSR, become a reality.

Today, 9th of November, in step 3, the ETUC is calling for increased EU investment to help turn the social rights in the social pillar into a reality.

The ETUI report ‘The country-specific recommendations (CSRs) in the social field’, by Stefan Clauwaert notes that ‘Marianne Thyssen, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, rightly said, after turning the page on the crisis ‘the next chapter is social’. The study states that the particular focus in this year’s recommendations are therefore reforms that facilitate investment in social infrastructure, education, early childhood education and care, and lifelong learning.
