Bulgaria: main trade union confederation, CITUB, is fighting for wage increases

The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Bulgaria (CITUB) has just launched a campaign entitled ‘I want an extra 100 leva’ (i.e. EUR 51) to obtain wage increases.

This campaign started with a Facebook page where employees can upload e-cards addressed to their employers to ask for a pay rise. It also has a dedicated website. CITUB justifies its action by the fact that Bulgarian industries have among the highest profit margins in Europe and some of the lowest wages. Its President, Plamen Dimitrov, says that this is deliberate social dumping, given the minimum wage of EUR 215, which is nine times lower than in Luxembourg and 22 % lower than in Romania.
