Romania: an important exception to the law on pensions

A law signed by Romanian president Klaus Iohannis introduces an important exception to the Law of Public Pensions. For a limited period of six months from the 27th of October 2016, it will be possible to pay pension contributions retroactively.

Active persons can use a form provided in the law to retroactively pay the contributions for the last five years or less, if they didn’t have any legal form of social insurance during that time. The minimum monthly amount is equal to the one paid for the minimum legal wage, adjusted with historical inflation, and the maximum is five times this amount. The sum can be paid all at once or in six monthly instalments. This allows workers who were not legally employed to complete their contribution stage and meet the legal requirements for a state pension earlier.
