Agricultural machinery standards not suited to women and older workers

The German Commission for Safety and Health at Work and Standardization (KAN) has released a study showing that German standards for agricultural machinery discriminate against older workers of both sexes. Agricultural machines have many mechanical parts, hatches and ladders that operators have to manipulate frequently. Agricultural machinery design standards set an operating force required to release these devices. The standards set values too high, requiring physical strength that most women and older workers cannot exert finds KAN from field measurements taken. The organization plans to put forward a proposed standard to DIN, the German standards body.
