Belgium: 28 000 cases of burnout in 2017

According to the figures of the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (INAMI), the Belgian body responsible for compensating workers who are incapacitated for work, 28 000 cases of burnout were recorded in Belgium in 2017. Of the 400 000 people who received compensation in 2017, around 7 % suffered from burnout and 15 % suffered from depression.

Talking to Le Soir, François Perl, Director-General of INAMI, said that it is essential to ‘look at these two illnesses together: burnout and depression have increased in parallel in recent years, and one is often diagnosed wrongly as the other…’. For a number of years this confusion has resulted in significant statistical inaccuracies: between 2010 and 2015 the number of cases of burnout doubled, but many of those cases were wrongly classified as ‘depression’.
