EU launches new awareness campaign on dangerous substances at work

In order to draw attention to health and safety issues in the workplace, the European Commission and the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has launched in late April a new campaign titled “Healthy Workplaces Manage Dangerous Substances”. This two-year long initiative is aimed at promoting various techniques for the management of hazardous substances in the workplace.

“Contrary to widespread belief, the use of dangerous substances is not decreasing in the EU, and the need to manage the risks they pose is as pressing as ever. Some of the substances that workers are most commonly exposed to include carcinogens”, stipulated the EU Commission in a press release.

“This is a key priority for the European Commission because the European Pillar of Social Rights entitles workers to a high level of protection of their safety and health at work. EU-OSHA’s campaigns are leading the way in reaching workplaces across Europe and helping organisations adopt effective approaches to occupational safety and health management with the necessary tools”, said Marianne Thyssen, the European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs.
