In this third conference of the ETUI’s cycle on the 'socio-ecological transition’, three European thought-leaders on sustainability went into debate about the foundations for a bold social-ecological vision for Europe.

Starting from a review of the latest findings of global climate scientists (5th report of the IPCC and the US 3rd National Climate Assessment), the three academics provided the basis for ETUI to make the case for a new mobilizing project of EU renewal.

Questions addressed during this conference are:

  • What is the state of the latest climate science and what are the implications for a climate deal in 2015?
  • Can the EU go beyond its austerity policies and develop a new economic model based on prosperity and social justice?
  • What new EU governance structures are needed to address Europe’s socio-ecological transition?
  • Can Europe develop a new vision of the future which can re-mobilise its citizens?

The speakers:

  • Jean-Pascal van Ypersele is professor at the Université catholique de Louvain and Vice-chair of IPCC.
  • Olivier De Schutter is professor at the Université catholique de Louvain and at the College of Europe (Natolin), visiting professor at Columbia University and author of report The EU’s Fifth Project: Transitional Governance in the Service of Sustainable Societies, he is the former United Nations' special rapporteur on the right to food.
