Turin training on capacity building for organising and managing trade unions

Turin training

A training course organised by the ETUI from 13-17 May in Turin, Italy, brought together trade union officers from 11 European countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and United Kingdom), 14 African nations (Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland and Zimbabwe), 2 countries from the Middle East (Lebanon and Jordan), and one from Asia (Myanmar). This training was organised in partnership with the ILO's Bureau for Workers' Activities (ACTRAV).

The delegates worked on issues which currently impact trade unions globally. They discussed e.g. how to manage and renew trade unions as effective worker-led agencies and looked at the ILO – Freedom of Association: principles and standards. They exchanged information on trade unions and strategic organizing, and learned about best practices when planning for union renewal. The course was very successful, and this was so because of the shared values of trade unionists – wherever they are.

As one European officer said; “Different union structures and definions provide challenges for our work. This course was a good reminder that we need a common approach to develop co-operation”.
