Short Description

Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI) is a non-profit research institute based in Bratislava, Slovakia. It fosters multidisciplinary research about the functioning of labour markets and institutions, work and organizations, business and society, and ethnicity and migration in the economic, social, and political life of modern societies. CELSI is independent from any ideology, political party, organization or government. In all its activities, CELSI fully commits to the values of academic integrity.

In its applied research and policy analysis CELSI promotes the focus on Central and Eastern European countries. CELSI fosters intensive cooperation with internationally recognized research institutions, seeking to build a bridge between forefront international expertise and in-depth knowledge of local experts.

CELSI’s network of research fellows and affiliates is a core asset in fostering exchange of ideas and knowledge about CEE labour markets or broader labour issues. This exchange is fostered mainly by means of CELSI’s discussion paper series, scientific workshops and conferences as well as collaborative research projects.  

Areas of expertise and competencies

Our areas of expertise are divided into the following sections:

-          Work and organizations: This research area seeks to understand the current trends in the behavior of organizations and their work practices and relations. Particular attention is given to employment practices in different countries and organizations, flexibility and security at work, as well as economic, social and institutional factors shaping them. To further our understanding of the ongoing changes in work practices, we investigate organizational behavior of multinational firms, interaction between global and local actors in shaping work practices, and cross-border transfer of work norms, standards and practices. We also focus on industrial relations, their Europeanization, and the position and future strategic challenges of national trade unions. -          Business and society: The relationship between business firms and the society has been subject to scientific investigation for many years. CELSI conducts behavioral and attitudinal analyses of corporate social responsibility (CSR), the role of different actors therein (i.e., multinational firms, small and medium enterprises, national governments and the civil society), subject areas in the practice of CSR and the fundamental driving forces behind the social and environmental responsibility of business firms in modern societies. -          Labour markets and institutions: Within this research area CELSI seeks to advance our understanding of the functioning of the labour market and the effects of labour market institutions on economic and social outcomes. The mechanisms that govern the effects and determinants of wages, unemployment, labour force participation, self-employment, and human capital are studied at both micro and macro levels. Among the covered topics are the functioning of various institutions of the welfare state such as minimum wages, unemployment insurance, and employment protection instruments. The roles of gender and social embeddedness of labour market interactions are given specific attention. Empirically, our research has a particular focus on the labour markets in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the particular conditions of socio-economic and political transformation in the region. -          Ethnicity and migration: The process of globalization and EU enlargement, interacting with the current economic, social and demographic challenges, puts the questions of migration and ethnicity into the spotlight of scientific and policy discourse. The issues addressed within this research area include the effects of migration on the source and destination economies, circular migration and brain circulation, remittances, labour market segmentation by ethnicity and immigrant status, and discrimination. Adjustment, integration and inclusion of immigrant and ethnic minorities as well as the specific conditions of the Roma and Russian ethnic minority groups are given particular attention. -          CELSI Data bank: Besides its academic competence, CELSI provides expert data services, including data collection, processing, database management and data analysis. For more than 10 years CELSI serves as the Bratislava office of the WageIndicator Foundation, a global online platform promoting labour market transparency for employers, employees and workers worldwide by sharing and comparing information on wages, Labour Law and career. Within WageIndicator, CELSI manages online surveys on wages and working conditions in over 90 countries worldwide. CELSI also provides access to various databases on labour market data to researchers by participating in an EC-funded H2020 research infrastructure InGRID2. Work programme, strategic plan, projects

CELSI’s work programme embraces stable data expertise within the global WageIndicator, and a high number of project-based research activities. CELSI participated in over 15 EC-funded projects in industrial relations, and in various other projects funded by the other EC funding schemes, the ILO, the European Parliament, national governments, trade unions, and other national and international organizations. Publications, language, newsletter

CELSI regularly publishes relevant academic contributions on CEE labour markets in its Discussion Papers series, and its Research Reports series. Shortly our Policy Brief series will be launched (early 2019). On a quarterly basis, CELSI sends out an electronic newsletter to all subscribers. All publications are in English and freely accessible on our website.
