Abstract
The pandemic accelerated the development of online education for many Unions. This resulted in different possible formats, which can be roughly divided into two main groups: synchronous and asynchronous learning.
Synchronous learning happens in real-time, often with a set class schedule and required login times. Asynchronous learning does not require real-time interaction; instead, content is available online for students to access when it best suits their schedules, and assignments are completed to deadlines.
The next edition of the ETUI “E-tutors training” focuses on asynchronous online education. It will take place on 22, 23 and 24 March, with three live and interactive online sessions, from 14:00 to 17:00 CET.
In 2017, the ETUI launched its online training offer, aiming at reaching a higher number of participants and providing them easy access to quality content. Based on the experience gained with the first pilot courses, asynchronous online courses on different trade union-related topics have been further developed. The pandemic boosted this process and, as a result, ETUI has now an online course offer covering different areas, including English, Project Management, European Works Councils, EU, and more.
With the “E-tutors training” national organizations could take stock of ETUI’s experience before considering developing their own plans for asynchronous online training.
The design, delivering and assessing online courses requires specific skills and knowledge. Roles and tasks of teams involved differ from traditional face-to-face courses. The need to nurture collective learning through online tutoring and facilitating online discussions is a priority for trade union educators also in an asynchronous digital learning environment. These are some of the aspects which will be explored during the training.
Aims:
- to understand the steps in designing, producing and running an asynchronous online course;
- to appreciate how the pedagogy of asynchronous online courses differs from synchronous training;
- to outline the different kinds of asynchronous online learning activity and how they work.
Participants:
This course is intended for trade union trainers from ETUC affiliated Organizations with or without prior experience on online learning activities who are planning to develop asynchronous online courses. A maximum of 20 participants can be accepted.
